IABPsi Welcomes You!

Welcome to the website of the Indiana Association of Black Psychologists.  Our mission is to serve Black communities in Indiana, however, we believe that the information contained in this website can meet the needs of many people outside of the state and beyond.

Within this website, we share useful information on a variety of topics to help you navigate what we call "Black psychology."  Our perspective is one that centers on wellness, helps cultivate your natural desire for learning and creativity, and encourages you to enrich your relationships.  We also include guidelines for selecting a therapist and offer tips for becoming advocates for stronger, fairer, and more healthy communities.

Thank you for visiting our website.

WHAT THERAPISTS DO

We honor exceptional therapists. If and when you decide you want to see a professional to help you through either a crisis or a journey toward improving your emotional and interpersonal life, we want to serve you by helping you select an exceptional one. To us at IABPsi, this means that the professional you choose should show an ability to embrace, explore, and validate your experiences as a Black person.

And it doesn't stop there: exceptional therapists strive to understand you fully and holistically in order to offer you the best help they can provide. They understand that race and culture necessarily blend with other aspects of identity, like gender, where you were raised, your family circumstances, and your spirituality. On our Getting Better page, we offer guidelines on selecting the right therapist for you.

Feelings of vulnerability and helplessness are important to our growth, yet we also could use guidance on how to act when forces impinge on us dramatically. IABPsi president Chalmer Thompson offers insights on her experiences as an avid boycotter and what she is learning, nearly daily, from her experiences. Check out her blog posts below, and on the Contact Page, include a comment that she can share in later posts.
